John Jackson Hull, 88 of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Fahrney-Keedy Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family. Born May 23, 1928 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of Gilbert P. Hull, Sr. and Susie H. (McAllister) Hull, who preceded him in death. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Patricia A. (Keefer) Hull. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Carl L. Hull, Gilbert P. Hull, Jr., and Robert R. Hull. He was a member of the 1946 class of Hagerstown High School. He was a graduate with High Honors of the first class of Hagerstown Junior College (now, Hagerstown Community College) in 1948 where he was also the Student Council President from 1947-1948. John graduated from Towson St. Teachers' College in 1950 with a degree in Secondary Education. He later received his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Maryland in 1956. John served as a Sergeant in the United States Army from 1950-1952, and was stationed in Fort Bragg, NC, as well as West Germany. He is survived by his two sons, J. Eric Hull and wife, Gwen, of Winfield, PA, and Thomas Hull and wife, Sue, of Clear Spring, MD; two daughters, Susan Baer and husband, Todd, of Boonsboro, MD and Winter Haven, FL, and Anne Benton and husband, Larry, of Hagerstown; four grandchildren, Adam Benton, Garrett Hull, Aaron Hull, and Perri Hull; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his longtime companion, Nancy Martin. John served as a member of the Board of Directors of Horizon Goodwill Industries for 20 years. At Goodwill, he also served as Board Chair and was subsequently awarded the Honor of Director Emeritus. He served on the Mental Health Board for 5 years. He also served as a member of the Washington County Retired Educational Personnel Association. He served as a Chairman of many committees. John retired from education for the first time in 1990. He started in 1950 as a 7th grade teacher at Old Washington Street Middle School before being drafted. He taught at Woodland Way Middle School. Served as a Guidance Counselor for North Hagerstown High School. He later became the Vice Principal of North Hagerstown High School, and Principal for Williamsport High School. John worked at the Board of Education as the Supervisor of Guidance. He also served as the Director of Supervision, Director of Professional Services, and Director of Employee Relations where he was the Chief Negotiator with the Teachers' Association and Classified Employees. Since his first retirement in 1990, John had served in various positions whenever needed with the Board of Education including acting as Deputy Superintendent. He served in these rolls of education in Washington County for over 50 years.
