Obituary

Jean Mentzer Marquiss, 85, of Hagerstown, MD, passed peacefully from this life early Sunday morning, August 12, 2018, tenderly cared for by the staff and nurses at Doeys House and comforted by her loving family and friends. Jean was born in Williamsport, MD, on July 25, 1933 to William and Mary Mentzer. She graduated from Hagerstown High School with the Class of 1951. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Earl Marquiss, Jr., her infant son Andrew, and sister JoAnn Goldenhar. Jean is survived by brother William Lee Mentzer (wife Jeanne), daughter Patricia Whitmore (partner Cheryl Hyslop; son Curtiss; granddaughters Emma and Ella), daughter Susan Craig, son David Marquiss (wife Kathy; daughters Denise, Bethany, and Courtney; grandchildren Kevin, Annalise, Samuel, and Coraleigh), daughter Cynthia Nalley (husband Bill; sons Andrew and Anthony; grandson Chad), daughter Mary Berry (husband Ken; children Lance, Caitlin, Amanda, and Jessica; grandchildren Keyton, Marlee, Makena, Brayden, Isaac, Evelyn, and Sydney), daughter Sarah Arch (husband Eddie and son Nathan), son William Marquiss (wife Janet; children Philip, Brody, Jordan, and Kate; grandchildren Hayden and Bentley), and son Richard Marquiss (wife Stephanie and daughters Eden and Logenne). Our mom loved to cook and bake, especially when it brought her family together! Apple, peach, and cherry pastry. Fudge (with creamy or crunchy peanut butter). Pie shells filled with apples, cherries, coconut cream, peaches, chocolate cream, and even raisins. Sausage gravy. German chocolate cake. Ham salad. Ham and cheese "taties." Pork tenderloin in gravy. Fried fish and fried chicken. And of course, her world-famous chocolate chip cookies. Dont call when shes in the middle of baking a batch of cookies; your call will go unanswered! Few things brought her greater joy than a gathering of her clan, in full or in part, whether it was celebrating the 4th birthday that month or just one or two stopping over for the evening to play Phase 10 on the back porch. Everyone was always welcome, and even if there werent fresh cookies, chances were there were baggies of them in the freezer. There are also countless people who have called her mom or grandma. She loved each of you as much as she loved her family, and judging by the mountains of cookies she baked, that was a lot! Moms family was her life, whether it was just a son or daughter who stopped by to take her for a ride in the car, or one of our biannual family trips together. With her we experienced Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, California, Montana, the Outer Banks, and Michigan, and always returned home with hilarious memories that only a close-knit family can share. Moms faith was her foundation. She became a Christian after meeting Dad and tried her best each and every day to live her faith. She was quick to lend an ear, slow to criticize, generous with her means, and if she felt that she had wronged you in even the very smallest way, was certain to make it right. Her life was a shining example of what the Christian life should look like. Her brothers and sisters in Christ at the Church of God Universal in Hagerstown were her extended family. Mom, you will be sorely missed. We will miss teasing you. We will miss speaking up so you can hear us, and you still misunderstanding! We will miss teasing you about sweeping the alley and scrubbing the front porch. We will miss "teaching" you how to text for the 20th time. We will miss the candy drawer and the homemade treats. We will miss seeing you smile. We will miss hearing you laugh. We will miss your love. Youre at peace, resting in Gods arms, but that only dulls the pain ever so slightly. Services will be held 11AM Friday, August 17, 2018 at Church of God Universal, 12819 Point Salem Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21740. Pastor Greg Tyler will officiate. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery Friday at 2 pm. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, and a half hour prior to services at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Moms name to Doeys House, 11370 Caring Pathway Lane, Hagerstown, MD 21742 or the Kings Ringers handbell choir of the Church of God Universal.
