Obituary

Janet Louise "Sis" Young, age 90, passed away at Doeys House in Hagerstown, MD on Friday, July 3, 2020, surrounded by family and friends. She was born on July 3, 1930 in Baltimore, MD to Madeline Salome (Bowman) Young and William Theodore Young. She was the youngest of 5 children and the only girl. Her parents and three brothers, William "Buck", Bernard, and Thomas predeceased her. Brother, Kenneth still resides in Hagerstown. In her younger years, Janet was a member of the All-American Girls Baseball League that the movie "League of Her own" was based upon. She pitched for the Hagerstown Mollies against mens teams. After being captain of her varsity basketball team, she went to Hood College for a basketball officiating test and became one of the youngest in the country passing with very high grades. She later played basketball for Fairchild and coached the first Hagerstown Junior College Womens BB team. Janet coached softball and was a high average duckpin bowler in Hagerstown area with many awards to her credit. Prior to her retirement, she worked at The Silk Mill, Loudontowne, and Mack Truck. After her retirement, she was a wonderful caretaker for many family members. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She is survived by her brother Kenny Young and wife, Doris; nephews, Rev. Tom Jr. and wife, Karen, Mike and wife, Marlene, and Steve and wife, Tammy; nieces, Linda Richards and husband, Robert, Kendra Gibson and husband, Blair are also among her surviving relatives, as well as many grand nieces and nephews. Janet had many good and close friends throughout her life for whom she was most grateful, as well as the friends made at the American Legion Post 211. Fran Marshall, Debbie Kerns, and Debbie Shuster were three of her closest and dearest friends. She was a friend to all and will be missed. A Memorial Service will be held at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at 1pm with Rev. Thomas Young, Jr. officiating. Burial will proceed in Rest Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should go to the charity of your choice.
