JANET LEE HANSEN THOMAS, 77, of 18033 Putter Drive, Hagerstown, Maryland, died on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at her home. Born June 2, 1927 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Walter Chester Hansen and Doretta Schulze Hansen. She is survived by her husband of fifty-four years, Douglas Carroll Thomas of Hagerstown; four children, Susan T. Straus and husband, Richard, of Rockville, MD, David T. Thomas of Germantown, MD, Carol T. Burlingame of Dillon, MT., and Ann C. Andrex and husband, David, of Frederick, MD; and ten grandchildren, Jason Burlingame and wife, Erica of Dillon, MT., Alison Burlingame of Fernley, NV, Nicole Burlingame of Missoula, MT., Eryka Andrex of Red Bank, N.J., Dylan Andrex of Baltimore, MD., Rachel Andrex of Frederick, MD., Leon Straus, Wesley Straus, Adelai Straus, and Bethany Straus all of Rockville, MD.; and three great-grandchildren, Skyler Burlingame of Missoula, MT, Natalya Andrex of Red Bank, N.J., and Makaila Burlingame of Dillon, MT. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1945 and the State University of Iowa in 1949. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She worked for the Des Moines County Welfare Department as a Social Worker 1949 to 1950. She worked as a Home and Hospital Instructor for Montgomery County Public Schools for fifteen years. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and served on the Altar Guild, and as a church schoolteacher at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Bethesda, MD. She was chair of the Library Committee and Sunday School Superintendent at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown, MD, and president of The Daughters of the King. Many volunteer activities received her time and devotion, including the Attic Thrift Shop at the Church of the Ascension, Gaithersburg, MD., Hagerstown Community College, Athletic Department, St. John's Family Shelter, The Share Food Network, Habitat for Humanity, Association of American University Women and the Mitten Shop at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport, MD. She was an avid bridge player and belonged to two active bridge clubs. One brother, William Hansen of Naperville, IL preceded her in death. Services will be held Friday, September 17, 2004 at 10:00 a. m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 South Prospect St., Hagerstown, MD. The church parking lot is at the corner of South Walnut and West Antietam Street. The Rev. Scott P. Bellows will officiate. There will be no public viewing. However, the family will receive friends at St. Mary's Chapel at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown after the services on Friday, September 17 from 11:00 a. m. to noon. Interment will be at the Church of the Ascension in Gaithersburg, MD at 2:00 p. m. on September 17th.
