Janet Eloise Roberts, 96, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Monday, June 2, 2025.
Born September 21, 1928, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Goldie (Burkett) Everline. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Clyde H. Roberts.
Janet graduated from Hagerstown High School with the class of 1946 and from Hagerstown Business College in 1947.
She was employed as the first full-time secretary of Hagerstown Junior College, which was located at the old Hagerstown High School. It was there that she met her husband, Clyde Roberts, who was the art teacher for both the High School and Junior College. They were married in July of 1951.
After her marriage, Janet transferred to Broadway Elementary School and later retired to become a full-time wife and mother. Janet then became an active member of the PTA, served as a home room mother, den mother for the Boy Scouts, and cookie chair for the Girl Scouts. After her children were raised, she went to work for the Washington County School system as a parent involvement aide.
She loved to travel. She and her husband, Clyde, visited all 50 states and all seven continents. They hosted trips for Richard's World Travel. They were in Moscow when the Astronauts and Cosmonauts joined in space.
Janet was a lifetime member of Zion Reformed United Church of Christ in Hagerstown. She began attending when she was 2 years old. There, she helped with Vacation Bible School, Zion's soup kitchen, Micah's Backpack, The Service Workers, alter committee, and knitted prayer shawls.
Janet is survived by a son, Kent F. Roberts and his wife, Pam, of Shippensburg, PA; a daughter, Cindy L. Downs and her husband, Andy, of Clear Spring, MD; and two grandsons, Alan Downs and wife, Melissa, of Olivehurst, CA, and Kyle Downs and wife, Vicki, of Waynesboro, PA. She has three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her three siblings, Milford Hugh Everline, Betty Jump, and Gilbert "Bus" Everline.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Zion Reformed United Church of Christ. The Rev. Bethany Apelquist will officiate. There will be no viewing. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
