James David Schaffer, 74, of Hancock, MD, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Meritus Medical Center. Born October 11, 1941 in Houtzdale, PA, he was the son of the late John Schaffer and Dorothy Marie (Bezilla) Owczarzak. James served in the U. S. Navy. He retired from Washington County Library. He was involved with Boy Scout Troop 15 in Hancock, MD. He was a lifetime member of Western Enterprise Fire Co., Antietam Fire Co., and Engine 3. He was a member of AMVETS in Hagerstown. James is survived by his wife, Gloria King Schaffer; two daughters, Tina Bellew and husband, Peter, and Michelle Schaffer; two sons, James Schaffer and wife, Nancy, and Marc Redick and wife, Kristen; one special son, William Gorsuch and wife, Anita; one sister, Mary Luksic; eleven grandchildren, Travis, Jerry and Justin Bellew, Aaron, Molli and Kaden Schaffer, Morgan Mills, Cameron, Saxx, Raia, and Saige Redick; and one great granddaughter, Ava Busch. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Wendy Redick Mills; one sister, Judith Schaffer; and two brothers, Jack and Gerald Schaffer. A Memorial Service will be held 2pm Friday, June 10, 2016 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. Chaplain Rev. Delancy Catlett will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial donations made to Boy Scout Troop 15, c/o David Mitchel, 14106 Heavenly Acers Ridge Road, Hancock, MD 21750.
