James "Jim" Ellis Socks, Sr., 82, died peacefully at Doeys House early on Tuesday, December 17, 2019. Jim was the son of George Phillip Socks, Sr. and Agnes Viola (Kendle) Socks. Jim married his wife, Josephine Raines, only two months after their first date, and they shared their lives together for sixty years until she passed in 2018. Jim is survived by one sister, Geraldine (Socks) Ziegler, of Hagerstown; his son, James "Jimmy" E. Socks, Jr. and his wife, Paula, of Hagerstown; his daughter, Judy Leann (Socks) Barnhart, of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Justin K. Socks, Shannon N. Twigg and husband, Mike, of Halfway, Thomas James Socks and wife, Lauren, of Mt. Airy, and Alex James Spessard of Hagerstown; great granddaughters, Jaci Faith Thompson of Halfway and Charlie Maria Socks of Mt. Airy; and several nieces and nephews, as well as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Jim was a master carpenter for 50 years and was known throughout the family for his craft. He retired at age 62 after working primarily in the construction trade his entire working career. He was also a member of the carpenters union. Jim was a member of the Virginia Avenue Church of God in Hagerstown and truly stood by his faith. He looked forward to Sunday morning service. Jim enjoyed seeing his grandchildren as often as possible. He always enjoyed a get-together. He was the life of the party on many occasions and was known to have a quick wit. Besides his loving family and walking in the path of his faith, he was known to say on more than one occasion how he loved a good cheeseburger and a card game. On any given weekend, you could find him watching Saddle Up on Saturday or Sunday after church. There will be a graveside service at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park at 2:30pm on Friday, December 20, 2019.
