JAMES WILLIAM HARDY, 89, of 20434 Jefferson Boulevard, Hagerstown, Maryland, died on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at his home. Born February 16, 1922 in Pleasantville, Maryland, he was the son of the late Rudolph and Anna Belle Marshall Hardy. During World War II, James served in the U. S. Army 8th Air Force 20th Fighter Squadron in England. He was employed by Lone Star Cement Company, retiring in January 1987. He was preceded in death by brothers, George Wesley Hardy, Henry Franklin Hardy, Charles Edward Hardy, and a sister, Mary Catherine Holmes. He was also preceded in death by second wife, Mildred (Sloan) Hardy in 1978, and third wife, Florence H. (Goodwin) Hardy in 1998. Mr. Hardy was a member of Masonic Lodge #84 Friendship AF&AM, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest #95, and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a member and past president of the Boonsboro Lions Club, and served on many committees and in community activities of that organization. He was also a member of Clopper Michael Post #10 American Legion Boonsboro, and a life member of the 822 A&E 20th FQ 8th Air Force. He is survived by children of his first marriage to the late Lydia Elizabeth (Grams) Hardy: Yvonne Wilson, and husband, James, of Hagerstown, Treva M. Iferd, and husband, Frank, of Emmitsburg, Maryland, Karen M. Leeds of Smithsburg, Maryland, and son, James William Hardy, II, and wife, Judy, of Myersville, Maryland. Mr. Hardy is also survived by grandchildren, Dennis Iferd, Seth Wilson, Dorlisa Minnick, Frank Iferd, Nathan Wilson, Heather Minnick, James W. Hardy, III, and Erin Hardy; and two great-grandchildren, Luke and Elizabeth Iferd. He is also survived by nephews, Wesley, Richard, and Elwood Hardy. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. Monday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Graveside military honors will be conducted by Amvets Post 10 and Marine Corps League. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 6 to 8 p. m. A Masonic memorial service will be at 6:00 p. m. Sunday by Friendship Lodge No. 84 A.F.&A.M.
