Obituary

HELEN JAYNE (FERSNER) STERLING was born in Hagerstown, MD on June 4, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Paul R. and Irene E. (McAllister) Fernsner. She is the last member of her immediate family. She was the widow of Lt. Col. Elwood B. Sterling who preceded her in death in 1971. Jayne was a 1940 graduate of Hagerstown High School and has been class reunion secretary for approximately 30 years. She was owner and operator of Jayne's Confectionery at 721 Potomac Ave. in 1941. Jayne was a former C&P telephone operator in the 1940's. She and her husband were among the partners in the first drive-in-theatre at Hancock, MD in the 1950's. She was a U.S. Postal substitute rural carrier on route 2 in Hagerstown from 1966-1983. She was a member and past president of Morris Frock Unit 42 American Legion Auxiliary, a charter member and past president of The Last Woman's Club of World War II and past Grande President of La Societe De Femms Grande Cabane Du MD. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies of the Elks #378, member of Fraternal Order of the Eagles Auxiliary #894, Potomac Fish and Game Club Auxiliary, and the Retired Officer's Association Upper Potomac Chapter and Military Officers Association of America. She is survived by one niece, Elaine Lohman of Clear Spring, MD; one nephew, Daniel Sterling of Clear Spring, MD; 3 great nieces, Melissa Lohman, Melina Lohman-Hinz and Lexi Sterling; one great nephew, Daniel T. Sterling; one cousin, Victoria McAllister-Hiett; "special friends" Virginia M. Rohrer, John and Sharon Sterling, Phylis M. Speaker, Gary Rohrer, Kirk Rohrer and several cousins. Jayne was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Hagerstown. She attended Sunday school in 1931. She was married by Rev. Harms September 12, 1947 and was a member until her death. Services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, April 11, 2016 at Minnich Funeral Home 415 E. Wilson Blvd. Hagerstown, MD. The Rev. Edward Heim will officiate. Interment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church 141 S. Potomac St. Hagerstown, MD. Online condolences are accepted at www.minnichfh.com.
