Helen Virginia Crum Hubbard passed away on Tuesday December 7, 2021, at Ravenwood Assisted Living, Hagerstown, MD. Born at home near Woodsboro in Frederick County, MD, on July 5, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Roger William Crum and Neva Pauline Redmond Crum, and the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Emory Lee Hubbard; fiancé, W. Robert "Bob" Bloyer; brothers: Wayne, Roger "Toots," Charles Henry, and infant John Simon Crum; sisters: Nancy Kritsings and Sue Patricia "Patty Sue" Mantell; brothers-in-law: Andrew Kritsings, David Mantell, and George, Henry, Charles, and Wilbur Hubbard; sisters-in-law: Charlotte Crum, Betty Crum, and Louise, Agnes, and Marie Hubbard; niece, Jean Mantell Krushinski Havel; great-nephew, Andrew Woodward; and, best friends, Ruth Bloyer and Peggy Weaver. She was also predeceased by her dear feline companions: Susan Q Kitty and Inky #2. Helen graduated from Walkersville High School and enjoyed attending as many class reunions as possible. She began working when she was young, first at the sewing factory and then at The Rosebud Perfume Company, both in Woodsboro, Maryland. She worked at banks in Baltimore and Hagerstown, and then as a title abstractor for Poole & Poole, PA and various attorneys' offices for many years until her retirement. Helen lived a generous and compassionate life of service and charity; was devoted to her faith; and followed the Golden Rule of treating others as she would prefer to be treated and said nothing if she could not say something nice. She was truly the epitome of a kind, gracious lady. Helen was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity, and served on the Search Committee, was a member of the Adult Choir, and was a lay reader, at one point she even worked as church secretary. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Towson Chapter, for more than 60 years. Helen was a very social person, who enjoyed a wide range of activities. In fact, she was on multiple bowling teams well into her 80s. She enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to have toured Europe, cruised around Alaska, and made multiple trips to sites of historical and geological importance in the United States. She also enjoyed pastimes closer to home, including attending Friday Club luncheons and accompanying her fiancé to Railroad Old Timer events. She was also a life-long fan of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. She was a Scrabble enthusiast and was very difficult to beat. Helen's life-long love of music and natural singing ability allowed her to be a very active member of church choirs and the Sweet Adelines, a global organization of female "barbershop" style singers. She never passed up an impromptu sing-along with family, accompanied by her husband, Emory, on the guitar, banjo, or autoharp. She not only enjoyed making music, but was also dedicated to promoting all of the forms of art. She patronized, sponsored, and volunteered at various venues and museums alongside her fiancé, Bob, and supported and encouraged the efforts of local artists. She frequently attended performances of the Maryland Symphony and at The Washington County Playhouse. Additionally, she held various leadership roles over the years with the Hagerstown Community Concert Association, often gifting concert/event tickets to friends, family, and others in the community. She was a supporter of many charitable organizations and tried to make a positive difference in the lives of others. She found great enjoyment and satisfaction from her work volunteering at the Lincolnshire Elementary School, often sharing stories of her experiences helping children learn to read. Helen is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of friends, as well as her extended family through her fiancé, of which she was thankful to be a part for many years. She will be particularly remembered by her dear friend, Judy Houser, and her niece, Susan Mantell Cobb, as well as her goddaughters: Teresa Mantell and Rhonda Kritsings Bean; and friends: Charley & Barb Ware and Myra Constable. Helen will be missed greatly by all who were fortunate enough to know her, but they will find comfort in knowing that their lives were richer by having her as part of it, even if for a short time. The loving care and companionship she received from the staff at Ravenwood Assisted Living and Washington County Hospice is appreciated and will be remembered. In accordance with Helen's heartfelt wishes not to endanger her family and friends during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, in lieu of funeral services, please observe a moment of silence, remembrance, and prayer at noon on Saturday December 11, 2021, after which you are encouraged to do as Helen usually would after a trying day or upset: enjoy a cup of hot tea, particularly her favorite, Earl Grey. A Celebration of Life in honor of Helen will be arranged at a later date. Arrangements by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown and Interment will be in Keysville Union Cemetery.
