HELEN CORNELIUS, 87, of 20014 Rosebank Way, Hagerstown, Maryland, died Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Washington County Hospital. Born May 7, 1922 in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late John and Rosa Wills Waechter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Cornelius in 1975. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters. She was a volunteer with Western Maryland Hospital Center, Avalon Nursing Home and Commission on Aging. She is survived by three step children, Helen Harden of Hagerstown, MD, Janet Gabelt of Connellsville, PA and Vernon Leonard of Dunbar, PA.; 36 step grandchildren and numerous step great and great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by step children, Violet Fuller, Anna Mae Damico, Joseph Cornelius, Jr. and Hiram Cornelius; sisters, Theresa Cantloupa, Mary Hodr, Madeline Thompson, Anna Spacik; brothers, John C. Waechter and John B. Waechter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 9:45am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 West Washington Street, Hagerstown, MD. The Rev. James Nirappell will be celebrant. Burial will be at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday 7:00-9:00pm at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd, Hagerstown, MD. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church.
