HAYDEN DOW HOFFMAN, 83, of Hagerstown, MD, quietly slipped away and touched the face of God Thursday, October 22, 2015, in the presence of his loving family at his home, following a massive hemorrhagic stroke on Thursday, October 15th. He was the son of the late Calvin Beard and Anna Buterbaugh Hoffman. Dow was also preceded in death by his brother Calvin Buterbaugh Hoffman. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Tamara Baker Hoffman; children, Krista Bingaman of Chambersburg, PA, and Mark Hoffman and wife, Shannon, of Ohio; grandchildren, Courtney Richer and husband Josh, Kerry Helman, and Brandon Boger and wife Casey; five great grandson, Peyton, Deacon, Mason, Braden and Jakob; one sister, Martha Joyce Hoffman Harms of Calvert County, MD; four nieces; one nephew; and cousins. In addition, he is survived by his loyal and faithful companions, his German Shepherd, Shadow, and his Schnottie, MacDuff. The son of the Assistant Superintendent of Prisons at Roxbury, Dow grew up living on the grounds of the prison. He attended Lappans School. Dow was a 1950 graduate of Hagerstown High School and attended HJC (HCC). He served in the US Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany with America Security Agency. He worked in his early years at the A&P Grocery Store, Fairchild Aircraft, and finally the US Postal Service where he retired after 33 years of service as a letter carrier. Dow was a member of First Hose Fire Co., BPO Elks #378, and Morris Frock Post #42 American Legion serving as President of the Korean Veterans Last Mans Club. He was a member of the Elks duck pin bowling team and played on the Senior Softball Team. Dow attended First Baptist Church serving as an usher for many years. A memorial service will be held to remember Dow, 11am, Friday, November 6, 2015 at the First Baptist Church, 15 High St., Hagerstown. Rev. Thom C. Smith will officiate.
