Harry Edward Daveler, 85, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Sunday, February 7, George Washington University. Born September 1, 1930 in Lewistown, MD, in Frederick County, he was the son of the late John S. and Rachell Thomas Daveler. Harry is preceded in death by his wife, Catherine E. Daveler who passed away March 7, 2008. A lifelong Lutheran, Harry was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, MD. In 1950, he moved to Hagerstown, MD and worked at Fairchild Aircraft Division. He married Catherine Elizabeth Dick on Good Friday, April 11, 1952. On November 20, 1958, Harry became a career firefighter for The City of Hagerstown and retired on November 20, 1988 with thirty years of service. He was a charter member of Local 1605, International Association of Fire Fighters, a member of the First Hagerstown Hose Company, Antietam Fire Company, Western Enterprise Fire Company, South Hagerstown Fire Company, Pioneer Hook and Ladder Company, Funkstown Volunteer Fire Company, Chaneysville, PA Volunteer Fire Company, and Cumberland Valley Fireman's Association. Harry served with Company A, 115 Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, and a life member of Post 78, 29th Division Association, and a member of Amvets Post 10. Catherine and Harry joined International Coachmen Caravan in 1971 and were charter members of Maryland Chapter 55, Pete's Pals, where they served as President, Secretary, and Chaplin. An avid sportsman, he was a Bestowed Life Member of the North American Rod and Gun Club, Inc. where he held the offices of Treasurer, Board of Directors, and Chaplin. He was also a member of the Long Bow and Riffle Club, Inc., and Old Tussey Hunt Club. Harry was a member of Eagles Club, Inc. in Waynesboro, PA, and Moose Lodge #2462 in Williamsport, MD. He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Ann Thurston and husband, Gilbert Thurston, Jr.; one son, Robert Eugene Daveler and wife, Deborah; two sisters, Mary Esther Kurtz of Wantagh, Long Island, NY, and Nancy Lee Chilton of Sun City, AZ; six grandchildren, Gilbert Dennis Thurston III, Tara Ann Simmons, Kelly Daveler, Matthew Daveler, Emily Daveler, and Joel Daveler; and four great grandchildren, Taylor Ann Duda, Jasmine Baugher, Gavin Teague, and Aria Daveler. In addition to his parents and wife, Harry was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Mae Gaver. Services will be held 10am Friday, February 12, 2016 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. The Rev. Edward H. Heim and Rev. Gilbert Thurston III will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The Hagerstown Fire Fighters Local 1605 Honor Guard will provide graveside honors. The family will receive friends, Thursday from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm at the funeral home.
