Obituary

Mr. Glenn "John" Allen Toms, 98, entered eternal rest, March 28, 2024, at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital after complications following surgery. He was born November 19, 1925, in Rouzerville, PA. He was the son of the late Lester B. and Sadie M. (Sharrah) Toms. He resided in Germantown, MD with his wife, Loy "June" (Huff) of 75 years. Glenn was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Damascus, MD.

Glenn Toms enlisted in the United States Navy in July 1943 and attended boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL. Upon completion, he was transferred to NAS Moffett Field and Port Hueneme, CA and joined CASU (Carrier Aircraft Service Unit) 42 when it was formed. CASU 42 departed the US for the Pacific theater on April 6,1944 onboard the SS Howell Lykes. He serviced aircraft electronics and served on Pityilu and Admiralty and Marshall Islands in the South Pacific until 1946, when he returned to the states. Glenn reenlisted and was stationed in Memphis, TN and Atlantic City, NJ until he was honorably discharged in March 1948. Glenn achieved the rank of Aviation Electrician's Mate First Class.

He worked for the Fairchild Aircraft Company in Hagerstown, MD until 1951 when he was called back to active duty during the Korean War. Glenn was stationed at Norfolk, VA and served as an Electronic Inspector. He was discharged in 1952 and returned to Fairchild Aircraft Company until 1960. He worked for Emerson Electronics for 2 years and then went to work for the Navy at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Carderock, MD. He helped design sensors and systems used to measure vibrations on nuclear powered submarines. He retired from civil service after 30 years but continued to work as a consultant in private industry for several years. He loved to travel the world and visited many countries on six continents. He was also active in the local VFW and American Legion posts and he along with his wife, helped establish the Admiralty Island reunion group in 1993. There, Glenn and June served as officers and helped organize annual reunion meetings.

He is survived by his wife and three children: Darryl B. Toms and his wife, Cheryl of Germantown, Gregory S. Toms and his wife Sharon of Annapolis and Lisa D. O'Neill and her husband Kevin of Clarksburg. He is survived by his eight loving grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters, Dolores K. Beaver, Hazel M. Coleman and Hilda M. Burns and two brothers, Robert E. Toms and Raymond L. Toms.

The viewing will be held at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown, MD at 1pm on Tuesday April 2, 2024, followed by the service at 2 pm. A graveside service will be held immediately after the service at Smithsburg Cemetery. Graveside military honors provided by Joint Veterans Council and Marine Corps League of Washington County.
