Obituary

Gladys Alverta Hunter, affectionately known as Memu, peacefully departed from this earthly realm on the 14th day of August, 2023. Born on the 6th of July, 1935, in the charming town of Hagerstown, MD, she was a beacon of love and care, who brightened the lives of all who had the pleasure to know her.

A woman of wisdom and grace, Memu completed her education in 1953 at Hagerstown High School, and then pursued her passion for healing and care at Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1956. She then embarked on a fulfilling journey as a registered nurse, specializing in labor and delivery, and home health. Memu's work took her across the country, and wherever she went, she left a trail of warmth and compassion.

Memu was a woman of many interests, each reflecting the depth and beauty of her soul. She found joy in the rhythms of square dancing and the melodies of song. She would lose herself in the pages of a good book and find herself in the words of Jesus. She was a lover of roses, a friend to dogs, and an admirer of the color blue. But above all, she was a lover of family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the apples of her eye, and she relished every moment spent spoiling them. In the words of the great poet, Maya Angelou, "I sustain myself with the love of family."

Memu was the embodiment of love, selflessness, and gentleness. She was a woman of strength, yet she possessed a delicate touch that could soothe any pain. She was a woman of beauty, not just in her physical presence, but in the kindness and care she extended towards others. She was, in every sense, the epitome of perfection.

Memu is survived by her loving children, Cathy Hunter, Donald Hunter and wife Terry, and Susan (Hunter) Graybill and Husband Nathen, and honorary daughter, Donna Glunt. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Ashton Marie (Mitchell) Rogers and Husband Richard, Tyler Mitchell, Samantha Hunter, Dakota Graybill, Sarah Rexrode and Husband Patrick, and Ashley Graybill. Her great-grandchildren Logan Frazier, Easton Rogers, Teagen Graybill, RJ Rogers, and Seth Rogers will carry her memory and the lessons of her love and kindness into the future.

In the immortal words of William Shakespeare, "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances." Memu has made her exit, but her spirit remains, alive and vibrant in the hearts of those she loved and those who loved her. Her story is a beautiful one, filled with love, care, and selflessness. As we mourn her departure, let us also celebrate her life, for it was a life well-lived.

In the words of Emily Dickinson, "Unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality." Memu lives on in the hearts of her family, her friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Her love is her legacy, and it is a legacy that will endure for generations to come. Rest in peace, dear Memu. You were loved, you are loved, and you will always be loved.

The family will receive friends from 9am to 10am on Friday, August 18, 2023 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD.  The Memorial Service will begin at 10am with Pastor Paul Swope officiating.  Burial will be in the Harbough Cemetery in Rouzerville, PA.
