Obituary

Gerard "Jerry" Joseph Quinn, of Kissimmee, Florida, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the age of 79.  Jerry was born on December 7, 1944, in Scranton, Pennsylvania to Ann Marie (McIntyre) and Frank J. Quinn.

Jerry graduated from Saint Paul High School in Scranton, PA, in 1962. He earned his bachelor's of Sociology degree from the University of Scranton before serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Jerry earned numerous medals during his military service including the Bronze Star. He worked for 35 years in the insurance industry for Erie Insurance Group, where he retired in 2007.

On October 6, 1973, Jerry married Joyce Stouffer at St. Ann Catholic Church in Hagerstown, Maryland, and started living their love story in Sharpsburg, Maryland. Jerry took on raising two young girls before adding Justin to the family in 1977 to make their family complete. Faith, family, and friends were at the center of Jerry's life. He was a passionate card player with pinochle and cribbage being his favorite games.

In addition to his professional career, Jerry was an avid member of his community in both Maryland and Pennsylvania where he spent the majority of his life. He was a member of the American Legion Post 46 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, for more than 50 years. He served as former Mayor of Sharpsburg from 1980 to 1992. Jerry was the local representative with the Maryland Municipal League, serving 10 years on the board and serving as its president in 1991. He umpired the Sharpsburg Little League for more than a decade.

Jerry was a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg before moving to Florida in 2020, where he was a member at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kissimmee until his death.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, bird watching, taking photographs and, when he was able to, traveling with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. During one especially memorable trip with his wife and two oldest grandchildren to the Florida Everglades in the early 2000s, Jerry learned the value of mosquito spray, understood why locals never wore cologne and why June is considered the off season in swampy areas. Although he lived in a different state, Jerry always made sure to be present in his family's lives whether it was through phone calls, visiting for the holidays or attending pivotal life moments such as First Communions, graduations, and weddings.

Jerry is survived by his daughters Cathy Smith of Mt. Airy, Maryland and Carol Etter of Kissimmee, Florida; son Justin Quinn of Hagerstown, Maryland; brother Frank X. Quinn of Schenectady, New York; grandchildren Joseph (Lauren), Jessica (Rob), Xavier and Garrett; great-grandchildren Benjamin, Olivia, Amelia, and Lucas; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sons-in-law Paul Smith and Joseph W. Etter III, sister-in-law Ruth Quinn, and favorite aunts Charlotte and Margaret McIntyre.
