GERALD CHARLES "MAYOR' HAINES, SR., 88, of Brownsville, Maryland, died Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Coffman Nursing Home. Born October 7, 1925 at Edgewood Farm, Rohrersville, Maryland, he was the son of the late Cecil S. and Myrtle Anna-Lee Mullendore Haines. He was the fifth of nine children. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-five years, Aleida Mae Haines on October 28, 2012. He was a graduate of Boonsboro High School. He worked during World War II as a production worker at Fairchild Aircraft, and later as a steam locomotive fireman on the B & O Railroad, 1st Division. He retired from Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, MD on October 31, 1988 after thirty-seven years. He was a member of Shenandoah Memorial United Methodist Church in Millville, WV, where he served as Lay Leader. He was a member of Antietam Lodge #197 AF &AM, located in Keedysville, MD. He was a member of the board of the KMYA Inc., serving as secretary. He was a member of the Olive Branch Chapter #34 OES, where he served thirteen terms as Worthy Patron and one term as Grand Representative to Washington, D.C. He was a former member of St. Bernard Commandery #9, Hagerstown, MD and a life sponsor of the Knights Templar Eye Foundation. He was a member of MD Lodge #1 Woodmen of the World, serving as treasurer. He was PGM of the Ancient and Historic VA#1, I00F. He was a charter member of the Shenandoah #2 Rebekah Lodge of I00F in Harpers Ferry WV. He was a member of the Gideon's International, Jefferson County Camp #U47063 in Charles Town WV. He was active in the United Methodist men's group on the Camp Hill/Wesley/Bolivar charge. He was chairman of the Street Light Committee for the town of Brownsville from 1958 through 1995. He enjoyed carving walking sticks and writing poetry, some of which has been published. The family would like to thank Coffman Nursing Home for their wonderful care. Gerald is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Barger and husband, Raymond, and his son, Gerald C. Haines, Jr. and wife, Rita all of Hagerstown, MD; six grandchildren, Heather Reese and husband, Michael of Greencastle, PA, Holly Weaver and husband, Christopher of Shippensburg, PA, Heidi Poe and husband, David of Orrtanna, PA, Hilary Cooper and husband, William of Robbins, NC, Alexander Haines and William Haines both of Hagerstown, MD; five great grandchildren, Tyler Reese, Evan Reese, Colby Reese, Lilly Poe and Gracey Poe. He is also survived by three sisters, Oneida Heffner of Knoxville, MD, Esther Bolt of Brownsville, MD and Elaine Smith of Boonsboro, MD; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marceline Zombro and Ardell Sera; three brothers, Elwood Haines, Arthur Haines and Robert Haines. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. The Rev. Jerry L. Lowans and Pastor Raymond Barger, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Rohrersville, Maryland. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
