FREDERICK ROBERT CIALLI, 78, a retired educator and active volunteer, died June 12, 2005 with Alzheimer's disease at Somerford Assisted Living, Hagerstown, Md. Fred was born in New York City in 1926, and was a graduate from Theodore Roosevelt High School. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II in Italy. He completed his undergraduate degree at West Virginia University where he played varsity football and baseball, and his graduate degree from the University of Maryland. His early years as an educator were in Allegany County, then Montgomery County, where he taught, counseled, and then moved into roles as a principal and supervisor, until his retirement at age 50. He and his family were active members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Bethesda, Maryland. In retirement, he was a member of and served on the vestry at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Berkeley Springs, W. Va. And St. John's Episcopal Church. Hagerstown, Md. In Berkeley Springs, he was co-founder of Morgan County Emergency Assistance Team. He and his wife, Shirlianne, moved to Hagerstown in 1987 where his many volunteer activities included Community Action Council, Hagerstown Community College ARCC, and co-founder of Washington County Habitat for Humanity. Fred enjoyed travel, both foreign and domestic, as well as tennis, dancing and fishing, especially on the Cacapon River at his cottage in West Virginia. Survivors include his wife, Shirlianne, one brother, Alphonse Cialli of Spring Valley, New York; three children, Maribeth Smith of Houston, Texas, Fred Cialli, Jr. of Round Rock, Texas, and Marji Cialli-Gearhart of Hagerstown, Maryland; four granddaughters, 2 great grandchildren, and sons-in-law, Lawrence Smith and Terry Gearhart. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 South Prospect Street, Hagerstown, Maryland on Saturday, June 25, 2005 at 11:00 a. m. Rev. Scott Bellows will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity of Washington County, St. John's Church, Hospice of Washington County, or contact the family for information regarding a foundation in Fred's memory for Caregiver's Education and Assistance.
