Obituary

FRANKLIN SCOTT LEITER, JR. (BUNNY), 88, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at the Washington County Hospital. Born October 22, 1919 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Franklin S. Leiter and Edna McCardell Leiter. Frank graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1938. He served in the European Theater, during World War II, with the 8th Infantry Division. He was employed by Willcraft Hosiery Mill in Williamsport for twenty years. In 1967, he opened the AAMCO Transmission Center, retiring in 1982. He was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and was active in forming the Sunday School Couples Class, as well as serving on the Church Council. As a member of the Lions Club of Halfway for fifty years, he held many positions within the organization, including President and Zone Chairman. He served the community in many ways through Lionism, and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian services. He was associated with the Hagerstown Almanack for forty years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 378, and the American Legion Post 42. Always interested in sports, he was an avid basketball player and ultimately became a referee. He was a ping pong champion and competitive tennis player. He was a golf enthusiast and enjoyed many games with his friends at Fountainhead Country Club. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-seven years, Virginia Ruth Leiter; and three adoring children: Carol L. Dofflemyer, and husband, Ted, of Annapolis, Barbara J. Kulenek, and husband, Tony, of Gaithersburg, and Franklin S. Leiter, III of Jacksonville, Florida; two sisters, Anna Hershey, and husband, Jack, and Catherine Bowman, both of Hagerstown. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Diane Gladhill, and husband, Robert, Jeffrey Dofflemyer, and wife, Jennifer, James Kulenek, and wife, Kathy, and Tara Leiter; great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Michael Gladhill, Morgan and J. J. Dofflemyer, Sam, Matthew, and Alaney Kulenek; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Remsberg, and Edna May Gysberts; and two brothers, Odello Leiter, and Richard Leiter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. Phillip W. Fogarty and Rev. Torben G. Aarsand will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Minnich Funeral Home, 4l5 East Wilson Boulevard on Sunday from 3 to 5 p. m.
