Obituary

Frances Estella Viola Norris, 97, rejoined her family in the presence of God on Thursday, March 3, 2022. She was born on March 2, 1925 in Pinesburg, Maryland, to the late Horace Lestley Renner and Ella Lillian Anderson Renner. Frances kept busy throughout her life, baking bread for the City Market in her earlier years, making meals and gathering clothes for needy families in the area, and cutting ladies hair and putting in perms. She taught Sunday School from 1952- 2013 at Salem Lutheran Church in Bakersville, served in the choir, was Sunday School superintendent, church council member, and later, church council president. She was also active as the leader of the Luther League and organized many ladies group events and meals. She worked at the Charles Hotel and at Phillip's Restaurant in her younger years, then at Dorbes Dress Factory, McCrory's Restaurant, Navillus Distributers, and held various positions at Two Guys Department Store until they closed in 1982. Frances was preceded in death by her husband of almost 38 years, Chester M. Norris Sr., in January of 1980, and her daughter, Darlene Hose in 2021. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Mae Staley Devers, Virginia Kline, Louise Fuller, Elsie Stottlemyer, Howard Renner, Anna Kunz, Lorraine Walker, and her son-in-law, John D. Price. She is survived by her children, Patsy Price, Chester Norris Jr. and his wife, Janet, her foster son, Charles "Skip" Rhoades, eight grandchildren, Teresa Mills, Kim Baker, Mark Price, Brenda Gladfelter, Tracy Kretzer, David Hose, Christina Beard, and Daniel Norris, and many great and great-great-grandchildren, with "not a bad one in the bunch", in her words. Family and friends are welcomed for a visitation on Monday, March 7, 2022 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard in Hagerstown. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at 10:00am at the funeral home. Pastor Regina Beard will officiate. Interment will be at Bakersville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Hospice of Washington County, 11370 Caring Pathway Lane, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
