Obituary

Floyd Wesley Spies passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on November 11, 2024 in Hagerstown, Maryland. Floyd was born February 5, 1928, the fifth son of Salem Luther Spies and Bessie Mae Kime Spies in McCherrystown, Pennsylvania, the youngest brother to Roy, Glenn, Clyde and Harvey, who preceded Floyd in heaven. He was baptized in Hanover, Pennsylvania.

Floyd's first 8 years were spent in a 1-room schoolhouse and he graduated from Hanover Eichelburger High School in 1945. He worked for a dollar a day on the farm and at the Supply Depot, driving a forklift at 16 years of age. He joined the Army Aircorp (before the Airforce had been created!) for 3 years, and was honorably discharged. After his discharge he spent 18 months in Los Angeles, CA, where he worked in the office for the Conservation Committee of the California Oil Producers, which had approximately 100 oil companies in their holdings. Floyd went to the University of Southern California at night and went to church on Sunday.

He also joined the Elks Club #1328 in 1948 and was a member of the Elks Club for the rest of his life, transferring to the Hagerstown Elks Club #95 in approximately 1956. Floyd also became a member of the Masons at Medary Lodge in Williamsport, Maryland, as well as the Tall Cedars and the Shriners in Cumberland, Maryland (Aligahn Shrine Club), and served as a President of the Shiners in Hagerstown from 1975-1976, providing fundraising for children's hospitals. Floyd also belonged to the American Legion #42 in Hagerstown, the Red Men club in Williamsport, and the Williamsport Country Club.

Floyd took his new 1940 Packard to drive back east to purchase a diner in Hanover, Pennsylvania and renamed it Floyd's Diner. After managing the diner for a year, he sold the diner because he was working over 100 hours a week to keep everything running properly! Floyd then worked as a Manager Trainee at Montgomery Ward for $50 a week! He then moved into furniture and clock sales for the rest of his career until he retired at age 71 in 1999.

But managing Floyd's Diner at the start of his career still gave Floyd something very special, because that is where he met Jennette (Gloria) Hoffman when she came into the diner with her Uncle John, and they were married within the year! Floyd and Jennette would enjoy over 74 years of marriage together! They raised three sons, Michael, Jay and Duane, who were all born in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Floyd was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover, Pennsylvania from birth until he joined the Army Aircorp at age 18, and remained a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.

After retirement, Floyd and Jennette celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii, along with two other couples (Tom and Marlene Shank, and Pat and Maxine Patterson) who were also celebrating their 50th anniversary in the same month, day and year! They enjoyed mimosas and beautiful scenery together. For many years these couples celebrated their anniversaries together, taking a cruise or a trip together. Floyd also enjoyed playing golf and playing cards with friends in his retirement.

Floyd is survived by his wife Gloria Jennette Spies, his sons Michael, Jay (Elaine) and Duane (Doris), his brother-in-law Jackie Hoffman, sister-in-law Mary Jane Buchman and sister-in-law Lorraine Donaldson, as well as many nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

The funeral will be held at 11am on Monday, December 9, 2024, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. Pastor Hoda Zavandro will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Inurnment will take place at 10am on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD.
