EVELYN LORRAINE STAPE, 96, of Hagerstown, MD passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018 at Hagerstown Healthcare. Born, December 1, 1921 in Chambersburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late William Denton Powell and Olive Matilda Hull Powell. Evelyn graduated with the class of 1939 from Hagerstown High School and spent her entire adult life as a secretary/bookkeeper in Washington, D.C., Upstate New York and Hagerstown, MD. She retired at the age of sixty-five in 1986 as Executive Secretary from Rust-Oleum Corporation. Evelyn previously belonged to the Business and Professional Womens Club (BPW), Hager Chapter, National Secretaries and the Womens Club. Evelyn is survived by a son, David J. Stape; a sister, Nellie Lee Powell, Takoma Park, MD; two brothers, Allan R. Powell, Hagerstown and David F. Powell, Boonsboro, MD and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Stape; four sisters, Mary Valentino, Chevy Chase, MD; Helen Eslick, Cincinnati, OH; Margaret E. Varner and Elizabeth K. Powell; and two brothers, Robert E. Powell, Long Beach, CA and Clarence K. Powell. There will be no viewing. A memorial service and interment will be at St. Pauls Church, 14106 National Pike, Clear Spring, MD on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria, VA 22314.
