Evelyn Syreita Cooper, 75, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2017 at her home. Born May 11, 1942 in Shepherdstown, WV, she was the daughter of the late Lester "Frosty" Shumaker and the late Mary L. (Sweeney) Shumaker Burgan. Evelyn retired from the City of Hagerstown, where she served at the Hagerstown City Park for 28 years. She is survived by four children, Evelyn "Evie" Farris, Samuel H. Cooper, IV, Kandy L. Cooper, and Robert M. Edwards; three brothers, Edward "Tootie" Shumaker, Ronald "Ronnie" Shumaker, and Glen Shumaker; 10 grandchildren, Christopher R. Smith, Stephanie E. Pinson, Jeannetta Cooper, Robert "Bobby" Poffenberger, Ashley L. Poffenberger, Dustin Poffenberger, Tyler M. Edwards, Logan M. Edwards, Aela Able, and Andrea Able; two step-grandchildren, Joshua R. Farris, and Amanda N. Farris; 23 great grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and companion of 28 years, Eldridge "Ed" Vance. In addition to her parents and former husband, Samuel H. Cooper III, Evelyn was preceded in death by her step-father, Doc Burgan; and seven siblings, Ellie Shumaker, Gerald Shumaker, Percy Shumaker, Barbara "Sis" Wolfe, Craig Shumaker, Jeff Shumaker, and Tommy Burgan. Services will be held 11 am Friday, December 29, 2017 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. The Rev. Robert Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9pm Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the funeral home.
