Ethel Marie Barnhart, 87, of Falling Waters, WV, passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2021. Born March 27, 1934 in Long Ridge, MD, she was the daughter of the late Earl Dewey and Annie Elizabeth (Exline) Bowman. Ethel was active in the congregation at Northside Mennonite Church where she regularly contributed meals from her kitchen to feed those in need. She loved travel and traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. She was a talented needle artist, quilter, and gardener. Ethel loved gospel hymns, long card games, baking pies, watching Hallmark movies, and swinging on the porch with her family. She held many jobs throughout her life, but her career was taking care of her family. Ethel was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her life was one of devotion to service and selflessness and unconditional love. She would be the first to tell anyone how imperfect she was, and yet everyone around her looked to her as an example of faith and love in action. She was steadfast. She stood firm in her faith in her Creator and Savior, and in loving her family and friends. She was an encourager. No matter what she was dealing with, she always had a kind word of encouragement for everyone around her. She exemplified a legacy of faith in God and loving others. She knew what life was about. No one left her house hungry, lonely, or without a hug or hearing an "I love you." Her hands, so eager to soothe and serve, are finally at rest. Maya Angelou said that people will forget what you say or do, but will never forget how you made them feel. And Ethel made each one near her feel worthy and loved. God has her safely in his arms, and we will keep her forever in our hearts. Ethel is survived by five children, Brenda D'Hoostelaere (husband, Joseph), Sherry Williams (husband, Kevin), Raymond Barnhart, Jr. (wife, Lisa), Clinton Barnhart (wife, Tina), and Lucinda Smith (husband, David); ten grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Her funeral service will be held at 11am on Monday, November 1, 2021, with Pastor Gary Zook to officiate, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport, MD. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, from 10am – 11am.
