Obituary

Edward Frank Mattax, 83, of Hagerstown, MD. passed away, Thursday, November 27, 2025, at his home. He was the husband of Rose Geraldine "Gerry" (King) Mattax for 63 years.

Born March 19, 1942 in Washington, PA, he was the son of the late Frank Edward and Birdie Mae (Luellen) Mattax. His family moved to Hagerstown in 1948 when he was 6 years old. He was a 1960 graduate of North Hagerstown High School and served four years in the U. S. Coast Guard, achieving the rank of Electronic Technician First Class (E6).

Edward met his future wife, Gerry, in 1958, while working part time at J.J. Newberry department store, during his junior year in high school. They were married January 20, 1962, at Salem United Church of Christ in Hagerstown.

In 1964, they moved to the Frederick, MD area, where they spent the next 49 years. Edward was employed by AT&T and retired in December 1998 after 34 years of service and then worked four years for the Verizon Telephone Co., retiring from the work force in July 2002. They moved back to the Hagerstown area in the fall of 2013.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church during most of his years in Frederick and then was a member of Salem Reformed Church on Salem Church Road, Hagerstown.

He was a member of the Elks organization since 1986. The first 26 years with Elks Lodge #684 of Frederick, then transferred his membership to Elks Lodge #378 of Hagerstown. Edward enjoyed golf and working on genealogy research.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two sons, Douglas Frank Mattax, and wife, Audrey, of Frederick and Steven Edward Mattax, and wife, Candy, of Waynesboro, PA; one daughter, Mary Lou Crum, and husband, Danny, of Mont Alto, PA,; one sister, Eileen Edith Andrews, of Hagerstown; six grandchildren, Christoper and Zachery Mattax, of Waynesboro, PA, Shane and Luke Mattax, of Frederick, and Christian and Sydney Crum, of Mont Alto, PA.

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by sisters, Anita Louise Olden in 1997, and her husband, Charles Olden, in 1980 and Christine Inez Miller, of Maugansville, in 2022; four-year old granddaughter, Kayla Nicole Mattax in 2004; and brother-in-law, Michael Andrews, in 2012, all of Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD,

Funeral services will be 10am Thursday, December 4, 2025 at Minnich Funeral Home with Pastor Eric Cox officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Road, Hagerstown, MD, 21740 in memory of Mr. Mattax.
