Edward A. Carr, Jr – Local Business Man
On Friday morning, October 7, 2022, Edward A. Carr, Jr, loving and faithful husband and father, went home be with our Lord.
Edward was born on May 28, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA to Edward and Florence Carr. He went to Dobbins Technical School and attended Drexel University.
He married Theresa K. Dougherty on June 17, 1961 in Philadelphia, PA. They were just two kids with humble beginnings who were committed to each other and to family. Together they raised two daughters, Kathryn and Colleen and one son, Eddie. Together they hosted many family dinners and cousin club get togethers. As a sports enthusiast, there were many trips to see the Phillies, Flyers and Eagles play. There were many family vacations to the Villas, NJ, Wildwood, NJ, Hawaii, Alaska, California, OshKosh, Wisconsin, Toronto, Canada and Disney World. He loved nothing more than diving into the ocean and playing with all of us in the ocean, building sandcastles on the beach, playing quoits. He loved to stroll the beach and boardwalk with his wife Theresa. He enjoyed watching all the cartoon movies with his grandchildren, Karina and Stefan.
With a job opportunity in Hagerstown, MD, Theresa and Edward moved to the area in 1979. Together, they co-owned and operated Hub City Sprinklers, Inc. for over 40 years. He was a humble man of, honor, integrity, strength, generosity and a man who fulfilled his commitments. He was a teacher and mentor.
He first learned to play golf from Uncle Jimmy and from there the passion to play golf was born. He played golf for over 60 years. He had his favorite foursomes over the years and would play in tournaments and take golfing trips to Pinehurst, Hilton Head and Fort Myers. He even managed to score a hole in one. Making golf clubs became a favorite hobby. He loved watching baseball and suffered with the Phillies.
With a passion for history he took his family to visit Civil War battlefields, especially Antietam, Gettysburg and Fredericksburg and frequented the Smithsonian museums in DC. He had a passion for World War II history as well, especially air and naval operations. He loved aviation and even flew in a propeller driven aircraft, T6 Texan. That same passion led him to build remote control model boats like the PT109. He also built a static scale model of the USS New Jersey which his father worked on at the Philadelphia Naval Yard.
He is survived by his two daughters, Colleen Carr and Kathryn Russell; one son, Eddie Carr, III; one sister, Gertrude Strowhouer; two grandchildren, Karina and Stefan Russell, and many nieces and nephews.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Carr, and one sister, Marjorie Effing.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 14, 2022 at 11:00 am at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown, MD 21740. Family will receive friends on Friday October 14, 2022 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Edward A Carr Jr Fire Protection Scholarship Fund, Hub City Sprinklers, Inc. 931 Sweeney Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
