Obituary

Edith Patricia "Pat" Carpenter, 90, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at Somerford Place in Hagerstown. Born in Big Pool, Maryland on October 23, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Carl Thurston Shank and Dorothy Mae (Cameron) Shank. Pat graduated from Clear Spring High School in 1949 after attending Hagerstown High School from 1946 – 1948. She resided in Hagerstown continuously from the summer of 1950 until her passing.

Pat was born in her maternal grandparent's house near Fort Frederick State Park. This house, then rented by her grandparents, has been restored to its 1914 appearance, when it was the one-room Williams Schoolhouse for African American children. Pat had hoped to have the opportunity to visit this house once the restoration was completed.

She and her late husband enjoyed traveling, especially with the Mack Golden Bulldogs, providing many fond memories in her later years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and cherished the many fond memories of time together with her family. Until she became ill, Pat was an avid reader, enjoyed watching Hallmark movies, and remained interested in current events. She was a member of Christ Reformed Church in Hagerstown.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Robert L. Sr. and her daughter, Donna L. Marchick. She is survived by two children, Karen L. Wetzel and husband Albert of Hagerstown, MD, and Robert L. Carpenter, Jr. of Monrovia, MD; son-in-law Robert J. Marchick of Newberry, FL; six grandchildren, Jason Wetzel and wife Chelsea of State Line, PA, Michael Marchick and wife Kendra of Newberry, FL, Andrew Wetzel and wife Eileen Sullivan of Frederick, MD, Julie (Marchick) Van der Waag and husband Robert of Alexandria, VA, Kristin (Carpenter) Mansolillo and husband Joey of Ellicott City, MD, and Kelley Carpenter of Pasadena, MD; and nine great grandchildren, Garrett Keener and Owen Wetzel of State Line, PA, Caelan and Beckett Wetzel of Frederick, MD, Nathan, Matthew and Caroline Marchick of Newberry, FL, and Joshua and Ryan Mansolillo of Ellicott City, MD.

She was the eldest of four children; she was also preceded in death by her three brothers, James Wayne Shank, Daniel Bruce Shank, and Robert Thurston Shank, all of Hagerstown, and her stepmother, Ethel Brannon Shank.

The family would like to recognize and thank the staff at both Somerford Place and Hospice of Washington County for their wonderful care and compassion.
