Douglass Carrington Cochran, Sr. 83, of Hagerstown, MD died on Saturday, April 7, 2007. Born Nov. 27, 1923 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia he was the youngest son of the late Thomas Rosser Cochran, Sr. and Wallace Low Cochran. He married Eleanor Locke of Berryville, Virginia his, "truly wonderful wife" of 54 years. In addition to his wife he is survived by daughter Jane Allison Childs and husband John of Glen Arm, MD; daughter Susan Low Kennedy and husband Rick of Waynesboro, PA; son Douglass Carrington Cochran, Jr. and wife Julianne of Stephenson, VA.; three grandchildren Jessica Locke Childs, Ian Campbell Cochran, and Elizabeth Chun Cochran; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and a brother Thomas Rosser Cochran, Jr. and wife Joan of Greensboro, NC. He was preceded in death by a sister Frances Overton Smith. He was a 1943 graduate of Big Stone Gap High School; received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory and Henry College where he earned 3 letters in football, and was elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities; and obtained a Master's degree from the University of Kentucky. He taught and coached athletics in Pound and Clarke County, Virginia and at South Hagerstown High School, Maryland. He retired from the Washington County Board of Education as Supervisor of Physical Education and Athletics, and Supervisor of Driver Education. He was the first Coordinator of the Washington County Junior Achievement, Inc., and served six years on the Washington County Park Board where he was instrumental in gaining approval to construct 18 tennis courts and 3 all-weather tracks at Washington County Schools. He was a Sergeant and Chief of Section of gun crew in the Army in World War II serving in 5 campaigns from Normandy to VE Day. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans; a 62 year veteran of American Legion Post #41, Berryville, Virginia, a 59 year veteran of Big Stone Gap Lodge #208 AF&AM, member of FPEO #387, and of Gold Club of Emory & Henry College. He was elected to the Maryland State Supervisors Hall of Fame; Emory & Henry College Sports Hall of Fame; Washington County Sports Hall of Fame; Clarke County, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame He was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and served five terms as member of the Session. Services will be held Thursday at 2 pm at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave, Hagerstown. The Rev. R. Benjamin Jones will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Minnich Funeral Home 415 East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. A Masonic Service will be conducted on Wednesday at 7:15pm by the Friendship Masonic Lodge # 84 A.F. & A. M.
