Obituary

Douglas Van Showe, 55, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and businessman, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025, surrounded by family after a lengthy illness.

Doug was a loving husband to Asonia Showe and a dedicated father to his only daughter, Reyna Thomas and husband, Jimmy, and 2 sons Richard Nixon and wife Beth, and John Nixon and fiancée Rachel. He was a doting Pappy to his cherished grandchildren: Lexus, Javen, Shelby, Kayden, Skyler, Addie, Elektra, Landon, Leland, and the soon-to-arrive Lailani. Doug is also survived by his caring siblings, Tammy, Vanessa, and Sean, as well as brother-in-law to Sam, Bobby, and Connie. He was the cherished son of Van Showe and the late Judith Boswell and Son-In-law of Thelma Socks and the late Bob Socks.

Doug met and married the love of his life, Asonia, in 1999, and wholeheartedly embraced the role of stepfather, creating a blended family filled with love and laughter. His home was the heart of family life, always welcoming anyone in need of a hot meal or a place to stay— as long as they didn't mind sharing space with a few dogs.

A lifelong resident of Hagerstown, MD, Doug had a passion for fishing on the Potomac River, breeding Golden Retrievers, and spending quality time with his family. He was a proud Sci-Fi enthusiast and had a keen interest in conspiracy theories.

After graduating from Hagerstown South High, Doug dedicated 32 years of service to the industrial gas industry. He faced incredible challenges, having defied all odds to beat a rare blood cancer following a stem cell transplant in 2021. Doug was a loyal friend, and anyone who knew him could attest to his unwavering support and kindness. He was a great man whose presence will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A visitation service will be held from 5pm-7pm at Minnich Funeral Home on February 10, 2025, where family and friends can gather to honor Doug's life and share their memories.
