DORIS SURHLAND SANFORD DIES AT AGE 100. Williamsport, Maryland, January 4, 2011 Doris Martha Suhrland Sanford, who celebrated her 100th birthday on June 20, 2010, died peacefully of natural causes today at the Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport, Maryland. Doris, the daughter of Leif Gustav Soren Suhrland and Ambjor Christiansen, was born in Watervliet, NY and raised in Schroon Lake, NY. She was graduated with a B.A. from St. Lawrence University in 1932 where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She married Roger Burton Sanford of Canton, NY, also a St. Lawrence graduate, in 1933. The couple resided most of their lives in Massena, NY where Doris was active in community and civic affairs. She served as president of the Massena College Club and the Massena Garden Club, and was a long time member of the Board of Trustees of the Massena Public Library. She was a senior warden and member of the Vestry at St. John's Episcopal Church in Massena. When her three children were grown, she returned to St. Lawrence University and obtained her masters degree in English literature. She taught English for 15 years until 1975 at Massena High School. In 1979, Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Roger B. Sanford. Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Martha and David Green of Carlisle, PA, Bruce and Marilou Sanford of Washington, DC, Palm Beach, FL, and Nantucket, MA, and Karl and Diane Sanford of Hagerstown, MD; six grandchildren, Lisa Sanford Davis of Littleton, CO (and her husband Michael Davis), Elisa Green of Chicago, IL, Eric Green of Chicago, IL (and his wife Jennifer), Ashley and Barrett Sanford of Washington, DC, and Derek Sanford of Baltimore, MD; and three great-grandchildren, Quinton and Grace Davis of Littleton, CO and Parker Green of Chicago, IL A requiem Mass in honor of her life is to be celebrated at the Chapel of St. James School, St. James, Maryland at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, the Reverend Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan, headmaster, officiating. An interment ceremony will be held next summer at Cedar River Cemetery near Blue Mountain Lake in the Adirondacks where Mrs. Sanford will be buried beside her husband and siblings.
