Doris Baker Coffin Dillon, age 97, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully at home on May 9, 2018. Born April 21, 1921, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of John K. Baker, Jr. and Catherine R. Munson Baker. She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1939 and from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in 1943 with a B.A. in education. She later earned her Master of Education degree, also from W.M.C. In her early career, Doris taught at Williamsport, Clear Spring, and Washington Street schools. She moved to Texas, then to New Jersey, teaching 6th grade at Atlantic Highlands P.S. Her husband, an Army sergeant, was assigned to Germany, and Doris and their daughter, Marjorie, accompanied him. In Germany she taught G.I.s, helping them pass the G.E.D. exam, then joined the faculty of the school for military dependents. When the family moved to Kennewick, WA, Doris taught 7th grade reading at the local school. They returned to Texas where she taught English at Magoffin Jr. High in El Paso. Doris and Marjorie returned to Hagerstown in 1963 and Doris joined the faculty at North Potomac Jr. High, and then returned to Williamsport. She retired in 1981 from Springfield Middle School. Doris was an active member of St. Johns Lutheran Church where she sang with the senior choir for many years, eventually becoming the librarian for the choir. She taught Sunday school and was a member of WELCA. As soprano soloist, Doris was guest soloist at concerts in area churches and organizations. For several seasons she was the guest soloist with the Hagerstown Municipal Band under the direction of Dr. Peter Boyd. She was a member of the Treble Clef Club; Hagerstown #89 Order of the Easter Star; WCRFC; Maryland Retired Teachers Organization; National Retired Teachers Association; Care Wear Volunteers; and a charter member of Phi Delta Gamma. Doris enjoyed crocheting and knitting and put her skill to use making caps and mittens for the children in the Head Start Program. She also made finger puppets and baby items for the local hospital and pregnancy center. She was preceded in death by her husbands A.E. (Jeff) Coffin and Howard S. Dillon; her brother, John K. Baker, III; and her daughter, Marjorie Coffin. She is survived by her stepson, Daniel F. Dillon; a cousin, Lucille Roney; and many friends. Services will be on Wednesday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac Street, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Linda Alessandri presiding. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
