DONALD FRANKLIN EVANS, 77, of 650 Observatory Drive, Hagerstown, Maryland, died Saturday August 13, 2011 at his home. He was formerly of Cumberland, Md. and had resided in Gaithersburg for 33 years. Born in Kitzmiller, Maryland, he was the son of the late George Dewey and Edna Marie Hipp Evans. He served in the U.S. Army in Alaska. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cumberland. He graduated from Allegany High School in 1953. He was a graduate Cum Laude of Allegany Community College in Cumberland with an Associate's Degree in Business Administration, and graduated from University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Business Administration. He was also a recipient of the Wall Street Journal Award. He worked for National 4-H Council in 1967 when he began as a student assistant while attending the University of Maryland. He also filled positions of administrative assistant to the center manager and business manager of the 4-H Council. He assumed the role of budget manager in 1964, and then served as benefits manager. He was a member of East Gate Masonic Lodge 216 in Cumberland; 32 degree mason with the Scottish Rite of Cumberland; Ali Ghan Shrine of Cumberland, a former member of the ritualistic team and a member of McKinley Chapter 12, Order of Eastern Star in Cumberland. He was also a member of Omicron Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor fraternity at the Allegany Community College; and was Who's Who in the East in 1989-1990. He was an avid reader, loved sports, was a Redskin fan and a Maryland football and basketball fan. He enjoyed cross-country skiing at Deep Creek Lake. He was a former Maryland Terrapin club member and loved tailgating with his friends. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joan MacDonald Evans. They were married April 11, 1970 at the University of Maryland Chapel. His siblings are Esther Evans, Leona Thren, Dorothy Sisler, John Evans, William Lee (Peck) Evans and Olin Evans. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Rev. Kyle Powderly will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Cumberland, Maryland. Military honors will be conducted at the gravesite by Post 13 Veteran Honor Guard, Cumberland. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Friendship Lodge #84 A.F. & A.M. will hold a masonic service at 7 p.m Tuesday. The family has requested that flowers be omitted and memorial donations be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 3551 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140.
