Dale Edward
Wierenga
Nov 4, 1947 — May 16, 2025
Dale Edward Wierenga, 77, of Boonsboro, MD passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025, in Frederick, MD.
Born November 4, 1947 in Morrison, IL, he was the son of the late Edward and Dorothy (Pilgrim) Wierenga, giving him his Dutch heritage, which was something he loved.
In 1969, Dale graduated Millikin University followed by George Washington University receiving a PhD in Genetics. A veteran of the U. S. Navy, he served from July 1970 to October 1975 as a corpsman. He then went on to a career in pharmaceuticals working in Vaccine and Drug Development. This led to his nickname "Doc", which so many affectionately called him.
Over the years, Dale was active in church, most recently as a member of Grace Reformed Fellowship, where he served as an elder.
He was very proud of his two children, Louis and Anna, and all of their accomplishments. His favorite times were spent with his four grandchildren: Wyatt, Gracelyn, Abby, and Evie; who called him Grandpa Doc; they were the joy of his life.
Dale loved the idea of farming and enjoyed his large property, his giant tractor and truck. He was incredibly proud of building Judy's chicken coop. He liked all things large, including his beloved dogs over the years. With the exception of his one small dog who was his favorite sidekick for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Dawn (Anderson) Wierenga, whom he married on August 22, 1970; one son, Louis Wierenga; one daughter, Anna McGrew, and husband, Matthew; four grandchildren, Wyatt Wierenga, Gracelyn McGrew, Abigail McGrew, and Evelyn McGrew; and one sister, Shirley Otts. His passing will leave a large hole in all their hearts.
Funeral services will be held 1pm Friday, May 23, 2025, at Grace Reformed Fellowship Church, 919 Corbett St., Hagerstown, MD with Rev. Garry Knaebel officiating. Burial will be at Manor Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Boonsboro, MD.
The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD, on Thursday from 6-9pm.
Memorial donations may be made to Grace Reformed Church.
