Craig Bitner Gerhart, 73, of Hagerstown, MD and formerly of Mercersburg, PA, passed away on Friday, April 30, 2021 at Meritus Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born November 21, 1947 in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Nelson and Kathryn (Bitner) Gerhart.
Craig was a 1967 graduate of James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg. He received a B.S. in Education in 1971 and a Master of Science degree in 1976 from Shippensburg University. Craig began teaching in 1971 and touched many lives as a 5th grade teacher with Central Fulton School District until his retirement after 39 years of service. In 2005, he was given the Shippensburg University School Study Council Outstanding Teacher Award. After retiring, Craig worked as a water fitness instructor at the YMCA of Hagerstown. He also volunteered as a mountain host at Whitetail Ski Resort. Craig enjoyed photography, skiing, biking, and going to Yankees and Orioles games with family and friends.
Craig is loved and will be greatly missed by his daughter, Kara (Patrick) Shilling of Croton-On-Hudson, NY; his son, Adam (Amy) Gerhart of Boonsboro, MD; his three grandchildren, Lauren Shilling and Aidan and Avery Gerhart; his golden retriever, Bear; and the many friends he made over the years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Trudy Gerhart.
A memorial service will be held 1PM Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Pastor Ray Roberson will officiate. There will be no viewing.
