CHARLES (SLUGGER) ELGIN, 69, of Hagerstown, Maryland passed away Friday, July 15, 2016 at Meritus Medical Center. Born March 14, 1947 in Hagerstown, he was the son of Loreda Elgin and the late Edward Lee Elgin. He was a 1966 graduate of South Hagerstown High School. Charles was employed with City of Hagerstown Water Department retiring in 2009 after thirty-two years of service. Charles started his volunteer service at the age of sixteen. He was a member of the of the Independent Junior Fire Engine Company No.3 since 1966 and President since 2000. He was also a member of Washington County Emergency Rehab. Antietam Fire Company No. 2, Western Enterprise Fire Ecnine Co. No. 4 and the Washington County Firemen Association and Williamsport Red Men, Conococheague Tribe No. 84. He is survived by his wife of forty nine years, Cecila Ann Elgin; two sons, Brian Elgin and Jamie Elgin both of Hagerstown; granddaughters, Amber Elgin and Jaylee Elgin; sister, Barbara Martin and husband Keith of Hagerstown; four sisters in-law, Mary Burkett of Hagerstown, Bonnie Youngblood and Becky Feigley both of West Virginia and Brenda Vanderspool of Florida; niece, nephews and many aunts and uncles. Memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. Chaplain Henry Ingram will officiate and assisted by Chaplain Richard Bower. Memorial service will be followed by Fire Department Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Post Office Box 11454, Alexandria, Virginia 22312.
