The 1964 founder of Washington County AMVETS Post #10, Charles Edwin Reeder of Hagerstown, MD, passed away in the early morning hours on Monday, March 16, 2015, at the age of 92. Born in Burkittsville, MD on September 22, 1922, he was the son of the late Otho and Olive Miller Reeder. Charles was a 1942 graduate of Boonsboro High School. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was employed through Glenn L. Martin, TWA Airlines, Fairchild, and retired from Mack Truck as Quality Control Engineering Supervisor. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. He trained at Camp Lejeune, NC. Charles later served on a destroyer patrolling Atlantic coast line from Nova Scotia to Bermuda. Charles was Post Commander-Clopper Michael Post #10, Boonsboro, MD. While there, he founded and formed American Legion Post #10 "Sons of Legion". He served years as Captain of Post #10 and Color Guard Captain. In 1964, he formed AMVETS Post #10, Hagerstown, MD. He served as Commander and held other offices. He served 26 years on the Maryland Veterans Commission appointed by the Governor. He was Post Commander of AMVETS Department of Maryland, and member of Forty and Eighter American Legion. Charles was most proud of the Veterans Wall in front of AMVETS Post #10 on Frederick Street, a project he was in charge of and took 3 years to complete. He took pride in veterans work and spending time with fellow veterans. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by one sister, Jane; and one brother, Bobby. He is survived by his wife, Doris E. Reeder, married in August 1945; daughter, Sharon K. Mattingly of Hagerstown; two sons, Allen L. Reeder of Williamsport, and Larry E. Reeder of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, March 20, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
