Obituary

Carrie Colleen "Billie" Powell, 96, of Smithsburg, MD, passed away Friday, May 21, 2021 at home surrounded by family. Born June 30, 1924 in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late William Welch Barr and Edith Ray (Uhler) Barr Smith. Carrie retired as a switchboard operator from C & P Telephone Co. after 32 years. She was a member of the Red Hatters "Anticuties", the Telephone Pioneers, Silver Bells, Lady Elks, Lodge #378, and AARP #623 Local and National. She previously was a member of Ladies Auxiliary American Legion, Post 42, in Hagerstown. Carrie was a former member of Grace Brethren Church and a member of the Keenagers of the church. She is a member of Welty Church of the Brethren in Smithsburg. Carrie was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Richard Merle Powell, Sr., on August 26, 1994. She is survived by two daughters, Lottie Rae Morris, of Smithsburg and Linda K. Wilson, and husband, Daniel, of Towson; daughter-in-law, Lynda R. Powell; one sister, Virginia (Anna Mae) Kimes; two brothers, Charles E. Smith and Harry T. Smith; six grandchildren, Patricia J. DeLashmutt, Andrea R. Tracy, and spouse, Todd, Sarah C. Morris, and spouse, Faith Canon, Jeremy P. Wilson, Caitlin E. Tellie, and spouse, Benjamin, Joseph E. Powell, and spouse, Kris ; six great grandchildren, Jordan A. Hafner, Elizabeth Tracy, Emma S. DeLashmutt, Cheyenne E. Powell, Joseph E. Powell, Jr., and Brighton W. Tellie. Carrie was preceded in death by a son, Richard M. Powell, Jr., on July 4, 2002; one son-in-law, Arthur A. Morris; one great grandson, Jonathan A. Hafner. Funeral services will be 11:30am Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Welty Church of the Brethren, 13465 Greensburg Rd., Smithsburg. Pastor Mike Kenney will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30pm Thursday in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10-11:30am prior to services at the church.
