Carole Jean Hayes, 84, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on December 21, 2023 at her home.

She was born November 20, 1939 on the family farm outside Hubbard, Iowa to the late Norman and Genie (Klemme) Maland.

Carole graduated from Hubbard Community High School in the class of 1957. She received an Associate in Arts from Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from State College of Iowa (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was an elementary teacher for several years in Aplington, Iowa Falls and Albert City-Truesdale School Districts in Iowa.

After the death of her husband William Reece, she moved to the Eagle, Colorado area where she met her husband Paul Hayes to whom she was married for 38 years. They lived in Colorado and then Maryland.

She earned her Master in Psychology degree from Salsbury University in Salsbury, Maryland and worked as a vocational counselor.

She is survived by her sister Lois Houghtaling (Robert) of Greenfield, Iowa; her brother Michael (Mary Ann) of Rochester Hills, Michigan; nieces Mary Houghtaling, Debra Houghtaling, Stephanie Edmisten, Amy Johnson; nephew Matthew Maland; and six great nieces and nephews Vinh and Khai Nguyen, Katie and Paige Edmisten, and Emerson and Tyler Maland.

In addition to her parents, Carole was preceded in death by her husband's William Reece and Paul Hayes.
