Calvin Merritt Mahaney, 95, of Fairplay, MD, died Friday, February 23, 2024, at his home.

Born February 2, 1929 in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late Vivan G. and Ardella V. (Everline) Mahaney.

Calvin was a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean War. He was employed at The Brethren Mutual Insurance Company for 45 years. At his retirement in 1999, he held the positions of President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board. During his insurance industry career, he held numerous positions, including President of Maryland Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, President of Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, President of Joint Insurance Association of Maryland, Chairman of the Board of Mutual Insurance Inspection Bureau, and Chairman of the Board of the Maryland Insurance Guaranty Association. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home in Boonsboro.

Calvin was a member of the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren where he served on the Church Board, chaired the Sunday School Building Remodeling Committee, and was a trustee on the Endowment Committee. While at Manor Church of the Brethren, he was chairman of the Sunday School Addition Building Committee.

He was the first person to finish thirty consecutive JKF Ultra Marathon's.

In addition to his parents, Calvin was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Betty J. Mahaney.

He is survived by his son, Steven W. Mahaney; two daughters, Diane R. Mahaney and Lori M. Hoyle; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family at the Manor Church Cemetery.
