Beverly Jean
Powell
Oct 10, 1937 — Aug 28, 2023
Beverly Jean Byers Powell, affectionately known as Bev, or "B" passed away peacefully on August 28,
2023, in her hometown of Hagerstown, MD, after a brave battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Born on October 10, 1937, to Preston and Helen Moats, Bev grew up alongside her sister, Carolyn, and her
brother, William.
Bev was a proud alumna of Hagerstown High School, where she graduated in 1955 and left a lasting
legacy as the Head Majorette. She furthered her education at Hagerstown Junior College (HCC),
attending classes that fueled her curiosity and love for knowledge. Her professional journey led her to a
rewarding career as a Supervisory Computer Operator Manager at the IRS in Martinsburg, WV, a role she
carried out with dedication and excellence until her retirement on December 31, 2004.
Beyond her professional achievements, Bev's true passion was her family. She was the proud mother of
Brad Byers, Lynne Smigelski, and Angela Mason, and was blessed with three grandchildren, Lindsay
Pompa, Jessica Smigelski, and Al Mason. Bev also had the joy of seeing her family grow further with the
addition of her great-grandchildren, Owen Pompa, Kylah Wilson, and Karson Smigelski. Her love for her
family was immeasurable, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
Bev's creativity shone brightly in her various artistic endeavors. As an artist, she worked with pastel
chalks, pencil, charcoal, and paints, creating beautiful works that were a testament to her talent and
vision. A skilled seamstress, Bev crafted many special pieces for those she loved, including her sister's
wedding gown, prom gowns for her daughters, flower girl dresses for her granddaughters, and a three-piece suit for her husband. Her creations were not just garments, but expressions of her love and care.
Music played a significant role in Bev's life. She had a particular fondness for country music and enjoyed
dancing, her spirit coming alive to the rhythm and melody. She found joy and solace in music and sharing
this love with those around her.
Bev's passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. However, her memory lives on in the hearts of those
who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love, creativity, and resilience remains a beacon of inspiration,
reminding us to cherish each moment, celebrate our unique talents, and love unconditionally.
Beverly Jean Byers Powell's life was a testament to the power of love, the beauty of creativity, and the
strength of the human spirit. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to live on through the
lives she touched and the love she shared.
"Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." Proverbs
