BETTY LEONA WRIGHT, 83, of 15807 Fairview Road, Hagerstown, Maryland, went home on August 14, 2007 to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, after a short battle with cancer. She was born June 6, 1924 in Hampshire County, West Virginia to the late Ray and Hilda Rouzee Smoot. Betty grew up in West Virginia and went to school at Slanesville, West Virginia. She moved to Maryland in 1955. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Wright, Sr. Betty was a person who loved people and if you came to her house, she always wanted you to eat. She was a very strong person and the backbone of her family. She loved her family very much. She was our mother and friend. She was employed with H. J. Heinz, retiring in 1977. She was also a homemaker. She is survived by six daughters, Helen Wright, and Pat Wright, both of Timmonsville, South Carolina, Janice Walling and Dolores Atha, and her husband, Benny, and Debbie DuVall, and her husband, Jim, all of Hagerstown, and Bonnie Meyers, and her husband, Delbert, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania; five sons, James Wright, Jr., and his wife, Carol, Gary Wright, Bill Wright, and his wife, Cathy, Donnie Wright, and Tim Wright, and his wife, Tina, all of Hagerstown; two sisters, Violet Hott, and Ruby Hott, both of Sharpsburg, Maryland; two brothers, Russell Smoot of Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Glen Smoot of Williamsport, Maryland; forty-two grandchildren, seventy-seven great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and an adopted southern daughter, Vickie Sellers of Florence, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Guessford Upperman, two sisters, Flo House and Helen Martin, one brother, Charles Smoot, Jr., two grandsons, and three son-in-laws. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. Friday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard. Rev. Jonathan Laye will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
