BETTY ELLEN METZ, 88, of 63 East Antietam Street, Hagerstown, Maryland, and formerly of Cumberland, Maryland, died on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at the Ravenwood Nursing Home. Born August 31, 1920 in Cumberland, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late William G. and Margaret Reckley Linn. Before retirement, she was a waitress at various establishments in the Cumberland area. She was a member of St. James Brethren Church. She is survived by her husband, Wilbur L. Metz; two daughters, Ina Merritt, and husband Bill, of Cumberland, Maryland, and Sande Urban of Sebastian, Florida; one son, John W. Balch of Frederick, Maryland; one step-daughter, Jonie Miller of Hagerstown; two sisters, Sally Lewis, and husband Raynor, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and Nancy Cage, and husband Norman, of Melbourne, Florida; grandchildren, Tina Shumaker Hyett, Nathan McFarland, Marie Holmes, Margaret Balch, and Leo Balch; great-grandchildren, Chloe Shumaker, Cameron Shumaker, and Caden Shumaker. She was preceded in death by one sister, Charlotte Wagner; and four brothers, Harvey C. Linn, Warren Linn, William Linn and James Linn. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p. m. Saturday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. Rev. Brian H. Moore will officiate. Burial will be Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
