BESSIE OLIVIA FREE, 98, of 18019 Oak Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, Maryland, died on Monday, October 4, 2010 at her home. Born October 2, 1912 in Carroll County, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late William David and Amy Coppersmith Spencer. She was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Free, Sr. on January 25, 1992. She retired from the Tortuga. She is survived by one daughter, Freda Free of Hagerstown; two sons, George M. Free, Jr. and wife, Kathleen, of Hagerstown, and Woodrow W. Betz and wife Joann, of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania; twelve grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Charles Nichols; four sisters, Daisy Fitze Woodworth, Annie Bohn, Goldie Elizabeth Fitze, and Mary Belle Spencer; and two brothers, David Grandville Spencer, and Raymond Erwin Stoner. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p. m. Friday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. Pastor Sheldon G. Green will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p. m.
