Bernard Gilmore
West
Jun 10, 1941 — Oct 2, 2023
Bernard Gilmore West, 82, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023, at Meritus Medical Center.
Born on June 10, 1941, in Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late Justine (Mills) and Walter West.
He dedicated his life and symbolized his dedication by water baptism in 1972. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses Orchard Hills Congregation. The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses is located on 30 Nottingham Road in Hagerstown, MD.
Our dad loved his family and was a wonderful provider, husband, and father. He was very generous with his time and resources. He had a funny bone and loved to laugh. He loved to travel with his family and friends to Jehovah's Witnesses assemblies and conventions. He also loved socializing at informal gatherings with family and friends. He was gifted in home maintenance projects such as painting, lawncare, and making sure the appearance of his home was pristine. During his youth and up until the decline of his health, he enjoyed a good game of golf. Later in life he developed a new-found interest in repairing and refurbishing computers.
As a youth our dad developed his love for golf while caddying at a country club. He later entered the military and upon an honorable discharge he worked at Penn Alto Hotel with his father. From there, he began a career with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for 10 years. After that for over 30 years, he worked for the Federal Railroad Administration as a Safety Inspector, which he retired from there.
Bernard is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jeanette West; four children, Carmen Minor, Lisa Cairo-West (husband, Bradley), Jessica West, and Kevin West; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Louise West in New Jersey and many cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Justine Fleming; and two brothers, Franklin West and Walter West.
The funeral service will be private.
