Obituary

ARTHUR J. SHARER, 87, of Hagerstown, MD died Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia. He was born January 19, 1922 in the Sharpsburg (Smoketown) area .He was the oldest son of the late Arthur C. and Pearl Baker Sharer. His wife, Elaine Gertrude Snodderly Sharer preceded him in death on October 6, 1991. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He received the Purple Heart for being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from Fairchild Aircraft in 1986. He was a member of Salem Reformed Church, Mercersburg VFW and the Southside Senior Citizen Bowling League. He is survived by two sons, Terry L. Sharer and wife Susan, Robert A. Sharer and wife Mary Ann; two daughters, Joyce E. Sharer, Debra J. Cushwa and husband William; two brothers, Ezra Sharer and Albert Sharer; sister Pearl Shank; grandchildren, Tammy Aaron, Tracy Mazzie, Christopher Sharer, Stacie Sperry, Steven Presgraves and Christina Cushwa; great grandchildren, Aaron Sharer, Taylor Sharer, Ryan Aaron, Colton Aaron, Ryan Sharer, Brady Sperry, Riley Mazzie, Madison Sharer and Caleb Sperry; and also many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Mitchell and half sister, Polly O'Neal. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Road, Hagerstown, MD. The Rev. Stephen E. Wagoner will officiate. Interment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors at graveside by Morris Frock American Legion Post #42. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Maryland and one before the service at the church.
