Obituary

Arthur Lee (Butch) Pereschuk, 82, born July 1, 1942, passed away after a courageous battle with lung disease on Friday, February 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Butch spent his life serving his community through his involvement with the Hagerstown and Funkstown branch of the Lion's Club, as a volunteer firefighter for Company 26 in Halfway, as a coach for Conococheague youth baseball, as a cub scout leader for Pack 102, as well as a foster parent for over 20 children in Washington County, MD. Butch was a long-time member of St. Paul UCC where he served the congregation as a member of the consistory as well as various fundraisers and charitable events. For the last six years, he's been a member of Salem Reformed Church in Hagerstown.

He received many distinguished honors and awards including Lion of the Year for four separate years over the course of his involvement and awarded Maryland Fireman of the Year in 1976 for saving the life of a child.

Making the most of life, he was involved in just about everything. He was a talented athlete and played in several leagues for softball, golf, football and bowling. He loved the outdoors and regularly enjoyed mushroom hunting, gardening, fishing and camping with his family. He really enjoyed family game time, playing cards (Poker, Setback, and Rummy) and board games of all kinds. He was always ready to bet someone a quarter on the outcome of the most mundane things. In his later years, he considered himself to be the undisputed champion of Five-Crowns.

Butch spent his career working for the City of Hagerstown and retired as Superintendent of Water Pollution Control Collection Systems.

There was nothing more important to Butch than family. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sonja (Farrow) Pereschuk. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter and "his baby" Renee, and her husband, Jim Rudolph, of Hagerstown, three sons, Michael Pereschuk, of Hagerstown, Jack Pereschuk, and his wife Nancy, of Chandler, Arizona, and Robert Pereschuk, and his wife, Lisa, of Hagerstown. He is survived by seven grandchildren, Bradley, Kevin, Jenna Rudolph, Desmond, Kieran, and Ronan Pereschuk, Julie and Robbie Pereschuk, and great granddaughter, Alisanna.

He is survived by his brothers, Cliff (Bonnie) Pereschuk, Earle (Krista) Pereschuk, Don (Jessie) Pereschuk, Gary (Joan) Pereschuk, Robert (Kellie) Pereschuk, Thomas (Patty) Pereschuk, and sister, Aleta Irving, brother-in-law, Gene Stone, two sisters-in-law, Shirley and Skipper Pereschuk, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline (Dutrow) Hawkins, and his father, John Pereschuk, brothers, Harold, John, Merrill, Larry, Kenneth Pereschuk, and Woodrow Hawkins, and sister, Barbara Stone.

Funeral services will be held 11am Friday, March 7, 2025, at Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Rd., Hagerstown, MD with Pastor Eric Cox officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
