Obituary

ALVIN LEE (BUD) ATKINS, 88, formerly of Hagerstown, Maryland, died Friday, December 2, 2011 at Twin Oaks Assisted Living in Williamsport, Maryland. Born March 1, 1923 in Virginia, he was the son of the late Harry B. and Beulah Judd Atkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes V. Galliher Atkins on January 6, 1990. He was a veteran of World War II serving in Europe with the 9th A.A.F. Airborne Troop Carrier Command. He retired from Fort Ritchie Post Engineers. He was previously employed with Fairchild Aircraft and Victor Products. Bud was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. He served as co-coordinator of the Community Food Bank. He was a member of the Funkstown American Legion Dixon Troxell Post 211, Silent Wings Museum Glider Pilots Association, AMVETS Post 10, SPCA of Washington County, National Association of Federal Retired Employees, and Williamsport Redmen Conococheague Tribe 84. He was a life member of BPOE Lodge #378. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by nephew, Frank Schleigh and wife Ruby of Hagerstown, and nieces, nephews and cousins. Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Stanley Steele and Rev. Thomas L. Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where the Elk Lodge 378 will have a memorial service at 6:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Building Fund, 601 Washington Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland, 21740, Community Food Bank at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland 21742 or Williamsport Retirement Village, 154 Artizan Street, Williamsport, Maryland 21795.
