STANLEY LEROY "STAN" SOCKS, 65, went to be with his heavenly Father on Friday, April 30, 2010 at his home surrounded by family and friends. Born November 2, 1944 in Washington County, Maryland, he was the son of the late John E. and Freda R. Wentling Socks. Stanley went to Hancock Schools. While in high school Stanley was an avid athlete, under the direction of coach, Jim Brown, whom he greatly admired. Stanley graduated on June 4, 1962 from Hancock High School. After graduation Stanley joined the United States Air Force and was deployed to Vietnam during the war. Stanley was very proud to serve his country and was considered a dependable and honorable soldier by all. After the Air Force Stanley joined the U. S. Army reserves and he served with the 1077th in Hagerstown, MD. Stanley worked for the Washington County Roads Department and Thomas Bennett and Hunter as a truck driver of thirty-five years, retiring in 2009. He was an avid book reader of Lewis Lamour; loved to watch, John Wayne westerns. He was a member of the American Legion. Stanley is survived by his ex-wife and friend, Carol Socks of Hagerstown and their children, daughter, Lori Dawn Oxendine Socks of Hagerstown and granddaughter, Kelsey Morgan; sons, Eric Vernon Sock and fiance, Claire, Ryan Leroy Socks and wife, Amanda and grandson, Logan Socks; and Tony Lee Socks all of Hagerstown. Stanley is also survived by one sister, Katherine Holland of Hagerstown; two brothers, Ralph Socks, Sr. of Hagerstown and Charles Socks of Hancock, MD. Stanley was known as uncle to many of his nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Stanley was preceded in death by one sister, Earlene Virginia Socks Kinzer; and son-in-law, Kirk Joseph Oxendine. A memorial service in honor of Stanley Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. Hospice Chaplain Anjel Scarborough will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Military graveside service will be conducted by the Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and the Marine Corp League. The family will receive friend on Wednesday from 1:00 to 2:00 p. before the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Stanley's honor to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742 or to the family to help with funeral expenses.
