Mary Phyllis Stowell passed away on December 25, 2016 at Robinwood Assisted Living in Hagerstown, Maryland. Born on January 13, 1928, in Cumberland, Maryland, she was the daughter of Paul and Edith Burley. Phyllis is survived by her son, Michael and his wife, Tina. Also surviving are two grandsons Zachary and Matthew, and three great-grandchildren Tucker, Bowen, and Macy. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, John Edward "Jack" Stowell, in 1985. She was also preceded in death by her brother Ben, and her sister Jean. Phyllis was a dedicated and loving teacher of 2nd grade students at Fountaindale Elementary School for many years. She earned her teaching degree from Frostburg State College, and her Master's from Shippensburg State College. She retired after 30 years to spend time with her family, travel, and to focus on church and many charitable organizations. Phyllis was a loyal member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown for almost 60 years. She worked in the clothing bank and served on the Altar Guild. She was a long-time member of the Sharpsburg Lion's Club, giving of herself for many projects and fund-raisers. Phyllis loved making crafts, cooking, painting, reading, and staying active. She also loved her monthly dinners with a lively group of ladies called the Ding Dong Diners. She was a gentle, loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend. Most of all, she dearly loved her family, and never missed an opportunity to spend time with her two grandsons. A service honoring Phyllis's life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown on Wednesday, December 28th at 3 PM. Friends are welcome at the Stowell home following the service.
