MARY ETHEL (HOLBERT) SMITH, of Cedar Lawn near Hagerstown, Md. died Wednesday afternoon at NMS Healthcare. She had been diagnosed with an inoperable Glioblastoma brain tumor on November 6, 2010. Born May 7, 1937 in Parkersburg, WV, she was the youngest daughter of the late P. Tell and Della D. (McClung) Holbert of Parkersburg, WV and Clear Spring, MD. Mary graduated from Clear Spring High School in 1955 and from Hagerstown Medical Secretarial School. Mary married her husband, Roger H. Smith shortly before finishing HMSS. They had been married 54 years. When their boys were both in school, she became employed with the Board of Education of Washington County as an aid. She worked at several schools before finally going to the Marshall Street School where she stayed for a majority of her time. She worked with handicapped children in many capacities. When Mary retired after 35 years, she was considered a paraprofessional. Her main job at that time was transcribing papers, tests and books into Braille for all sight impaired children of Washington County, MD. Mary was very active in her church. She was a member of the Consistory, helped to organize the several yearly yard sales and volunteered whenever she was needed. Mary was a very active person. She made quilts at home and met with the Dry Run Quilters at St. Paul's Church, Clear Spring, every Wednesday. She had many hobbies which included working in her yard, reading and other sewing activities. Besides her husband Roger, Mary is survived by her two sons, Rodney W. Smith and wife Kimberly of Hagerstown and Larry H. Smith and fiance Donna Jenkins of La Plata, MD. Mary has three grandchildren, Sheldon Smith of Falls Church, Va., and Adele and Lane Smith, attending James Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA. She also has two sisters, Jean Bruchey and husband Jack of Falling Waters, WV and Ruth Ann Stephens and husband E. Edward of Washington, WV. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Holy Trinity, United Church of Christ, 17805 Oak Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, on January 8 at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Timothy Leighton will officiate. Burial will be private at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown. A reception will follow the service at the church.
